The return of The Duke. Wellington “The Duke” Mara passed away in October, 2005 at the era of 89 after dedicating 81 years to the New York Giants as an administrator, owner, and unwavering booster. In 1940, heeding the advice of powerful team holders Tim Mara of the New York Giants and George Halas of the Chicago Bears, the NFL selected Wilson as the league’s official football supplier. The following year, Wilson presented a redesigned football and named it “The Duke” in honor of Mara’s son, Wellington. Know what you are buying,

This is the official football used by the NFL and you will be paying for it. If you want an cheap, lasting, all weather football, there are great balls by Spaulding, Nike, Wilson, in the $20 $40 range.
Now that does not mean the Wilson F1100 official football is a rip off, just realize what you are purchasing. It is a great ball, with a great feel, that’s pretty lasting. If you have played basketball with a leather ball, you will recognize that a leather ball isn’t as sticky as the high tact, composite leather balls we are usually used to playing with. That is not to say it is slippery as a wet fish either, but the slight difference in material is worth noting.
A football that costs upwards of $70 is usually for the fact that you are to get the official ball used by the NFL. If you want the authentic football that you see your beloved players using, then this is the football for you. If you are looking for a good ol’ fashioned ball that you will not mind to get scuffed and dirty as all footballs get, this one included then there are lots of much cheaper footballs out there that perform just as effectively.

When I bought this football, I already had an NFL sized composite football that I loved to throw around. I liked the idea, though, of having a leather football just like the ones used in the games that I could keep for many years.
After receiving the ball, I has been surprised how slick and hard the ball was in comparison to the composite ball. I have reasonably big hands, and it’s sufficiently more hard to grip the ball. It’s also a little tough on the hands when catching it. I hope it breaks in a little.
Nevertheless, I’m still happy that I bought the ball. Owning it’s nearly like owning a part of sporting history.
