The Finder makes working with your files and papers as easy as browsing your iTunes library. Click to expand. Dock + Finder
The Dock in Mac OS X gives fast, one click access to usually used applications, folders, files, and downloads from the Internet. The Finder makes working with your files and papers as easy as browsing your iTunes library. What is the Dock?
The Dock at the bottom of the screen gives you fast access to your most usually used applications, files, and folders. With its visually appealing, high resolution icons, the Dock practically begs to be clicked. When you do, your applications spring to life instantly, and a bright signal tells you which applications are open. You may also use Expos&eacute, from the Dock to instantly see all the open windows for an application. You may be able to set the Dock to remain at the bottom of the screen, framing your desktop picture and generally observable. Or you may be able to set it to tuck itself away, prepared to return when you move the pointer to the bottom of the screen. The sidebar in the Finder window is your starting point when browsing your Mac. The Dock at the bottom of the screen gives you fast access to your most usually used applications and files. Click to expand. Mac OS X helps you navigate everything on your Mac visually with an novelty called Cover Flow. Click to expand. What’s in your Dock.
The Dock comes loaded with icons for many of the applications included with your Mac Dashboard, Mail, iCal, iPhoto, and so on. But as you’d expect, it is easy to customize. To add a new application or folder, just grab it from the Finder and move it onto the Dock. The Dock expands to make room for the new item, and if you have many of things, the icons scale to fit on your desktop. Removing and rearranging things is just as simple: Click and drag. Stacks for your stuff
A stack is a Dock item that gives you fast, direct access to folders and files. When you click a stack, the files inside spring from the Dock in a fan or a grid, based on the number of things or the preference you set. Mac OS X starts you off with premade stacks for downloads, applications, and papers. The Downloads stack automatically captures files you download from Safari, Mail, and iChat. The Applications stack gives you fast access to all your applications. And the papers stack is a great place to keep things like presentations, spreadsheets, and word processing files. The files in each stack can appear as big icons that preview their contents, so it is easy to find the right one before you click. Stacks are scrollable, so you may be able to easily view all things, and you may be able to navigate through folders in a stack to see all the files inside the stack. Create as many stacks as you wish simply by dragging folders to the right side of your Dock. All new: Expos&eacute, in the Dock.
With Expos&eacute, now integrated into the Dock, you may be able to view the open windows of a specific application with a click. Just click and hold any application icon in the Dock, and Expos&eacute, tiles the open windows of that application while causing the windows of other applications to fade away. The clutter cleared, you may be able to easily find the document you need. A click makes it the active window, and pressing the Space bar gives you a full screen preview of the window. That is not all you may be able to do with Expos&eacute, in the Dock. When you drag a file onto a Dock icon, all the application’s open windows pop up, so you may be able to place the file in the right window perfect if you want to attach a document to an email message. Introducing the Finder.
The Finder is like home base for your Mac. Represented by the blue icon with the smiling face, it is one of the 1st things you see when you start working on your Mac. It allows you to manage and access practically everything on your Mac, as well as applications, files, folders, discs, and shared drives on your network. You may also see rich, high quality previews of the contents of your files. The Finder takes full benefit of the advanced technologies in Mac OS X such as 64 bit support and great Central Dispatch so it responds more quickly to your actions. Meet the sidebar.
The sidebar in the Finder window is your starting point when browsing your Mac. If you have used iTunes, you will feel right at home. Like iTunes, the sidebar is organized into groups to make it simple to find your stuff frequently accessed folders, CDs and DVDs, computers on your local network, and so on. With some clicks, you are on your way to finding what you need. The sidebar includes a useful Search For section. It uses Spotlight search to let you quickly find files you have changed today, yesterday, or in the past week, or find all pictures, movies, or papers. Just click one of the folders and you will see an up to the minute list of files. And just like the Dock, you may be able to customize the sidebar with your search folders. Instant networking.
Any Mac or PC on your home network automatically appears in the sidebar, allowing you to easily share files between them and use Spotlight search and Cover Flow to search the other computers. And when you click a connected Mac, you may be able to use screen sharing, which allows you to see and control another Mac as if you sitted in front of it useful, as an example, when you want to show someone how to use an application or feature. See your files in Cover Flow.
Mac OS X helps you navigate everything on your Mac visually with an novelty called Cover Flow. Using Cover Flow, you may be able to flip through your papers as easily as you flip through music in iTunes or bookmarks in Safari 4. Each file is displayed as a big preview of its 1st page, so you may be able to really see the contents of a document before opening it. Three more ways to view.
You may also see your files in list view, which allows you to easily sort them in different ways, as well as by file name, date changed, or file type. You may be able to see them in column view, which allows you to navigate through many folders quickly. And you may be able to see them as big icons, up to 512 by 512 pixels in size. Icon view allows you to thumb through a multipage document or watch a QuickTime movie right in the Finder, an easy way to find and view your stuff. Expos&eacute, unshuffles overlapping windows on your desktop into an organized thumbnail view, so you may be able to quickly find and switch to any window or get to any file on the desktop. Click to expand. Expos&eacute,
Instantly view all open windows in stunning style with a single keystroke. Expos&eacute, unshuffles overlapping windows on your desktop into an organized thumbnail view, so you may be able to quickly find and switch to any window or get to any file on the desktop. From chaos to order.
If you like to work with many applications and papers simultaneously, you most likely use up time each day poking through your open windows just to uncover the one you need now. Would not it be great if all you had to do was press one key to snap all of that window chaos into order? That is exactly what Expos&eacute, does. With one keystroke, Expos&eacute, instantly tiles all your open windows, scales them down, and neatly arranges them, so you may be able to see what is in every single one. And you certainly can see each one, because Expos&eacute, preserves the visual quality of the window in its reduced size. To see a full screen preview, just press the Space bar. That is not all. Move from one tiled window to the next and you will see its title displayed at the bottom of the window. When you find the window you need, just click it. Magically, every window returns to full size, and the window you clicked whether it is a folder, a PDF, a QuickTime movie, or a Word document becomes the active window. Return to your desktop.
There is another feature in Expos&eacute,. Press one key to push all the windows on the side, giving you instant access to your desktop. Once you grab what you need, another keypress brings all the windows back. Want to open a document? Check to see if the CD or DVD you are burning in the background is ready? Or quickly find and drag a file into an email as an enclosure? Expos&eacute, makes it simple. All new: Expos&eacute, in the Dock.
Expos&eacute, not only tiles all your open windows, it also allows you to view the open windows of a specific application. As an example, say you are a Keynote maestro and frequently have up to a dozen papers open simultaneously. Expos&eacute, makes finding the one you need very easy. Just click and hold the Keynote icon in the Dock, and Expos&eacute, tiles your Keynote windows while causing the windows of other applications to fade away. The clutter cleared, you may be able to easily find the document you need. A click makes it the active window, and pressing the Space bar gives you a full screen preview of the window. Favor keyboard shortcuts? You may be able to tile application windows with a keystroke, too. And that is not all you may be able to do with Expos&eacute, in the Dock. When you drag a file onto a Dock icon, all the application’s open windows pop up, so you may be able to place the file in the right window perfect if you want to attach a document to an email message. Instantly preview the contents of your papers without ever opening them. Quick Look
Instantly preview the contents of your papers without ever opening them. Flip through multipage PDFs, watch full screen video, view photo slideshows, and more. With a single click. Opening files is so last year.
Fast Look is the groundbreaking technology that gives you a sneak peek of complete files even multiple page papers and video without opening them. All you must do is choose a file in the Finder and press the Space bar. An elegant transparent window appears, showing you the contents of the file instantly. It is great when you are looking for something particular but do not have time to open lots of files to find it. See everything.
Fast Look works with almost every file on your system, as well as pictures, text files, PDF papers, movies, Keynote presentations, Mail attachments, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. To see a file in fast Look, you simply tap the Space bar or click the fast Look icon in the Finder window. You may be able to view the file in full screen, and you may be able to open the application that produced it with a double click. Best of all, fast Look works if you do not have the application that produced it perfect when a colleague sends you a document that you could not otherwise open. A fast Look back in time.
You may be able to use fast Look to your advantage when you are searching for files to restore in Time Machine. Once you find the file you are looking for, use fast Look to verify its contents before restoring it to the desktop. View attachments, no detachment.
Fast Look also works in the Mail and iChat applications in Mac OS X. Say you get a message with a bunch of attachments. Instead of downloading and opening every one, you may be able to use fast Look to see them with a click. It is great for looking at PDFs, Microsoft Office papers, and other files. You may be able to view attached photos as a slideshow and add them to your iPhoto library with ease. With Spotlight, you may be able to find anything on your computer as quickly as you type: files, email, contacts, pictures, calendar events, and applications. Click to expand. In addition to the Finder, Spotlight search technology is built into other applications in Mac OS X: Mail, Address Book, iCal, System Preferences, Preview, Safari. Spotlight
With Spotlight, you may be able to find anything on your computer as quickly as you type: files, email, contacts, pictures, calendar events, and applications. And because it is built into the core of Mac OS X, search results update instantly whenever files change. Stop looking, start finding.
Spotlight is the lightning fast search technology built into Mac OS X that makes it simple to find what you are looking for, if you do not know where to look. Conveniently available in the Mac OS X menu bar, the Spotlight search field gives you instant results as you start typing, encompassing not only files, folders, and papers but also messages in Mail, contacts in Address Book, iCal calendars, things in System Preferences, applications, and dictionary meanings. Spotlight searches are not confined to your computer you may also search other computers on the network. The need for speed.
Built into the core of Mac OS X, Spotlight delivers results so quickly because it indexes files on your computer in the background, so you never experience lag times or slowdowns. And when you make a change, like adding a new file, email, or contact, Spotlight updates its index automatically, so search results are generally up to the moment correct. Searching with smarts.
When you search with Spotlight, you are really accessing a complete, constantly updated index that sees all the metadata inside supported files the “what, when, and who” of every part of info saved on your Mac including the kind of content, the author, edit history, format, size, and many more details. Most document types, as well as Microsoft Word papers, Adobe Photoshop pictures, and email, already contain rich metadata. And because Spotlight indexes content also, your search results include what appears inside a file or document, not just its title. When you click the document, you’re now taken to that spot in the document with the search terms highlighted. Smartly organized.
Thanks to the speed and flexibility of Spotlight, you will discover many new ways to manage your files. You may be able to save the results of a search as a Smart Folder that automatically updates as you add, change, or remove papers on your Mac. Smart Folders contain files grouped together depending on search requirements instead of physical place, so the same file can appear in many Smart Folders without moving from its original saved place on your system. No have to copy, shift, or update files: Spotlight Smart Folders keep everything organized for you. It’s in the Mail. And more.
Also to the Finder, Spotlight search technology is built into other applications in Mac OS X: Mail, Address Book, iCal, System Preferences, Preview, Safari. No matter which application you search, results appear now after you start typing some letters. And your search is customizable. In Mail, as an example, you may be able to search in selected mailboxes or across all of them, and in individual fields To, From, Subject or complete messages. In Address Book, you may be able to search the complete list or individual groups. With its simple, elegant interface and support for the new Internet standards, Safari gets out of your way and allows you to enjoy the web. Safari 4
Experience the web with the fast, easy to use web browser. With its simple, elegant interface and support for the new Internet standards, Safari gets out of your way and allows you to enjoy the web. Surf fast.
Safari four in Snow Leopard outraces all other browsers. On the most calling for Web 2.0 applications, Safari delivers blazingly fast performance using the new Nitro Engine. As an example, thanks to 64 bit technology in Snow Leopard, JavaScript performance in Safari four is up to 50 faster than the 32 bit variant of Safari. Also, Safari offers top flight HTML performance the best on any platform loading pages up to three times faster than Internet Explorer eight and nearly three times faster than Firefox 3.5. What does all that mean for you? Less time loading pages and more time enjoying them. Distraction free browsing.
Safari sports a clean, elegant look that keeps your concentrate where it belongs: on the content of the web page. The features you use most are just a click away, and an integrated Google search bar makes it simple to find what you are looking for. Crash tolerant.
Safari four in Snow Leopard is more tolerant to crashes. It turns out that the number one cause of crashes in Mac OS X is browser plug ins. So Apple engineers redesigned Safari to make plug ins run individually from the browser. If a plug in crashes on a web page, Safari keeps running. Just refresh the page and get going again. Flip through history.
Safari four offers a dramatic way to revisit your browsing history. Just type a word or phrase in the History Search field in Top Sites, and Safari quickly presents you with full page previews of the websites that look exactly as they did when you last visited them. You flip through them just like in Cover Flow in iTunes or the Finder, then click to access the page you want. See your Top Sites.
The new Top Sites feature allows you to enjoy a stunning, at a glance preview of your beloved websites without lifting a finger. Safari four tracks the sites you browse and ranks your favorites, presenting up to 24 thumbnails on a single page and making them available with just a click. You may be able to customize the display by pinning a favorite site to a particular place in the grid. And a star in the upper right of each thumbnail indicates if a site has new content since the last time you visited. Surf securely.
With support for the new standards for secure access and info sharing on the web, Safari protects you if you are browsing the Internet at home or on a public computer. Safari offers fitted antiphishing technology that detects fake websites and warns you before showing the info. It also supports EV Extended Validation Certificates, so you may be able to feel confident shopping, updating account info, or paying bills online. Kid proof the Internet.
Start your kids’ web exploration off on the right foot with Safari parental controls. Using the same technology that keeps your inbox free of junk mail, a content filter in Mac OS X takes a fast peek at websites before they load and tries to find out if they are suited for kids. If they are not, Mac OS X blocks them from view. You may be able to override this filter by creating lists of particular websites you want or do not want your kids to see. Mail offers an elegant user interface that makes it simple to manage all your email from a single, ad free inbox, when you are not connected to the Internet. Click to expand. Mail, iCal, Address Book
Three fitted applications that work as one: Mail, iCal, and Address Book bring the power of Mac OS X to your email, calendar, and contacts. You get elegant, easy to use interfaces, lightning fast searches, and complete integration across the applications and your Mac. Mail: All your email accounts in one place.
Intended from the ground up exactly for email, Mail offers an elegant user interface that makes it simple to manage all your email from a single, ad free inbox, when you are not connected to the Internet. It works with most email standards including POP3 and IMAP and most liked email services, like Gmail, ! Mail, and AOL Mail. If you have more than one email account, no problem. Just add all your accounts to Mail and you will be able to access everything from one central place. Microsoft Exchange Server Support
With Snow Leopard, Mac OS X is the only operating system with fitted support for the new variant of Microsoft Exchange Server. So you may be able to use your Mac with all the features and applications you love at home and at work and have all your messages, meetings, and contacts in one place. Data, detected.
Mail does more than just show email. It also analyzes the contents to assist you act on them. Say you get an email inviting you to dinner at Gino’s Pizza tomorrow at six p.M. Mail not only recognizes that six p.M. Is the time, it knows that “tomorrow” represents a date on a calendar. So you may be able to add the invitation to your iCal calendar by clicking the date, if it is an real date October 18 or a relative date tomorrow. It also knows that Gino’s is a place, so you may be able to click the address to view a Google map of the restaurant’s place. And if the message will include a phone number or email address, you may be able to add it to deal with Book with just a click. Filtering the junk.
Mail will include an intelligent mail filter that automatically catches messages it thinks are junk. Junk mail is placed in a special folder in Mail so it does not clog up your inbox. If a junk message gets through, simply click the Junk button, and from then on, alike email will be placed in the Junk folder. The more you train Mail to recognize junk mail, the better it gets. Address Book: One place for all your contacts.
Address Book gives you a adaptable and convenient place to store contact info for your family, friends, and colleagues. You may be able to import info from other applications, create distribution lists for clubs and groups, print address labels and envelopes, and more. Because Address Book is built on the industry standard vCard format for storing contact info, your friends can send you cards that you may add to your list by dropping them in no typing obliged. Do more with your addresses.
Address Book does more than display card contents, it also allows you to use them. Click an address to ask the web for a Google map showing the place. Click a URL to open the web site. Click an email address to instantly send a message or start an iChat conversation. ICal: A powerful desktop calendar.
ICal makes it simple to keep track of your busy schedule. You may be able to create as many separate calendars as you need one for home, another for school, a 3rd for work, and so on. You may be able to see all your calendars in a single window or decide to see only the calendars you want. RSVP you.
With iCal, you may be able to invite friends and family to events. ICal allows you to create invitations using contact info from your Address Book, update your guest list, keep track of attendee responses, and get the new position info. A centralized notice box keeps all your invitations and responses in one easy to access place so you may be able to manage events in iCal instead of your busy email inbox. And when you or another Mac user receives an iCal invitation in Mail, it is automatically added to iCal. Find what you need.
Thanks to Spotlight, it is easy to find info in Mail, iCal, and Address Book. Inside the applications, a search kinds through everything all fields in an email, all info on a card or appointment so you find every possible match. If you are not using the applications, you may be able to still find messages, contacts, and appointments by using Spotlight search in the menu bar. Start typing a search term and Spotlight returns the related things now. Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes.
Spotlight technology helps you manage your mail and contacts in another big way: Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes. You simply choose the relevant criteria say, every contact with a birthday in the next 30 days or every email sent by your boss and your applications create a folder containing every item that meets your requirements. Best of all, the folders stay updated as new things are produced. Smart Groups in Address Book appear in your Group list, and Smart Mailboxes in Mail appear just below your inboxes. Fully integrated.
Because they are Mac OS X applications, Mail, iCal, and Address Book are completely integrated with each other and with other features of your Mac. As an example, Mail and iCal use the contacts in your Address Book, so you may be able to quickly send messages or invitations to persons and groups. Mail can access your iPhoto library, so it is easy to email pictures to your friends and family. If you get an attachment, Mail allows you to use fast Look to view its contents without saving the attachment and opening another application. REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

Is Apple’s new operating system, Snow Leopard, a strong, dependable OS that shows the versatility of Macs? Yes

That being said, is Snow Leopard an essential upgrade? No, not exactly.

THE DIFFERENCE isn’t THAT DRASTIC

The differences between Apple’s “Tiger” OS 10.4 and “Leopard” 10.5 were obvious, and there were many enhancements that made the upgrade useful. Like Time Machine, Boot Camp, fast Look, and many more The bulk of changes between Leopard 10.5 and this new release, “Snow Leopard” 10.6, are “under the hood” so to speak, so the average user may not notice as most of a change as they’d expect with an OS upgrade. But then again, why fix a bone that is not broken? Leopard was a success, and Snow Leopard improves on it, without drastically changing the user experience. The most of enhancements influence system dependability, speed, and resourcefulness. There’s also Microsoft Exchange support, which is great for those who need it.

EXPECTATIONS

I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade knowing full well it was not going to be a significantly different OS, so I was by no means disappointed. I have been following the tech news about Mac and Windows operating system upgrades closely, and am well aware that August’s release of Apple’s Snow Leopard and October’s release of Microsoft’s

Windows seven are meant to offer extra stability and implement greater resourcefulness, rather than totally overhaul the user experience. This is not a bad thing, since greater system dependability is more vital than adding bells and whistles that finally take away from the user experience i.E. Vista.

EXPERIENCE

I have only installed it on only one computer so far running on an Intel chip and 4GB of RAM, but installation was a breeze, and Snow Leopard was running smoothly so far. I earlier strongly disliked Preview’ and Quicktime’ since they were so slow I favored freeware Xee’ and VLC Media Player’. With Snow Leopard, loading times have observably improved for both Preview and Quicktime. I have not still noticed other enhancements in speed, but that may be because my computer was already fast to start with 4GB is great!.

Additionally, while I personally upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, it’s nice to know that if you were not using OS 10.5 Leopard and were still on OS 10.4 Tiger, you may be able to upgrade straight to OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.

LAST THOUGHTS

I did not have issues with Leopard, so I do not think Snow Leopard was to me as essential an upgrade as Windows seven will be to Windows Vista. That being said, Snow Leopard is a strong and dependable OS, so I do not regret my buy. The low price makes this an cheap upgrade solution, but caused by the lack of drastic changes between Snow Leopard and its predecessor, one that is not totally needed.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

&nbsp,&nbsp,

The most extraordinary thing about Snow Leopard is simply that it may be installed on a Mac running Tiger. You don’t have to pay the money to purchase the boxed set to upgrade if you never upgraded to Leopard. That means that you may upgrade a Tiger computer to Leopard using this disk. It’s up to the user to find out if they have an ethical problem with that, Apple surely knew that this was possible when they released the software: they understand and use DRM effectively and generally have. The fact it’s missing here tells me that they’re mainly worried with to get Snow Leopard unto as many computers as possible as fast as possible. I’m sure part of that’s the want to have Snow Leopard outperform Windows seven which debuts in October.

So what do you get with Snow Leopard? The answer is mainly performance boosts, though many of those aren’t really related yet since not many virtually none 3rd party applications use the performance gains offered by Snow Leopard. Alike to Windows 7s capability to load share between CPU and GPU, many of the changes in Snow Leopard will take some number of years for developers to really start to use and write programs for.

Relying on 64 bit architecture through the complete OS, Snow Leopard is generally an upgrade for the future: as developers write programs that take benefit of the new, higher roof, end users like you and I’ll benefit. For now, most of the performance increases are only related to Apple’s own software. But, that is not to say these are not nice or useful, and in many cases impressive:

1 Opening big photos is faster in preview mode

2 Quicktime uses considerably less CPU on all Macs despite of generation. Older Macs benefit the most with as much as 40 performance gains.

3 Time Machine backups take about 20 less time

4 Snow Leopard itself installs faster than Leopard

5 Boot times are faster with Snow Leopard by 5 10, Shut down times are somewhat faster also.

6 File compression is faster by 10 15

These are somewhat simplified. If you want the exact numbers you may be able to find them online: Google “Snow Leopard Performance”

Of all of these, the performance increases afforded to older 1st generation Macbooks are the most important. Breathing new life into older hardware is not easy, particularly not important enhancements. Snow Leopard manages to do just that and make slower 1.6ghz MacBooks that more useful.

Installation itself is a SNAP did I talk about it takes less time than Leopard?. I have already upgraded a MacBook and MacBook Pro, and installation was simple, fast, and easy. I plan to install Snow Leopard on another older Macbook afterward in the week and will upgrade this review once I have.

The not many new visual tweaks are nice, but not the reason to upgrade. Better stacks is useful, as is the quickness of Finder, but in general I do not find myself blown away by the upgrade. This is not an completely new OS with a great array of enhancements, on the side from the welcome and useful performance increases. That said, if you’re a power user or just observant, you’ll NOTICE the speed increase, particularly in Finder. I used to favor Google Desktop search on PCs to Finder, but this upgrade swayed me to favor Finder.

     UPDATE September 2nd 2009

A not many other changes of minor importance but on occasion great usefulness:

1 Air Port now shows all available wireless networks and their relative signal strength, something Windows has done going back to XP, but that for many weird reason was absent from OSX 10.X till now. Now when you turn on the Air Port you get a drop down to choose which wireless signal you want also as signal strength.

2 The date was added to the desktop. This is not that amazing but it’s useful.

3 I’m LOVING the way stacks work now. They are so more intuitive to use and navigate, particularly the capability to brows through directories directly from the stack itself.

4 Trash has the capability to restore a file to it is original place right from the trash. This is a feature common to Windows that was strangely absent from Mac OS. It is nice to see them catch this omission and correct it, but odd it took this long to do it.

A big complaint:

1 Seriously, no support for CS3? Why Apple, why? I do not have the great to drop on the newest variant of CS. This is , frustrating, and makes me wish I could take back a star and downgrade this to a 4 star review. CS3 is still so widely used that I am amazed Apple decided not to offer support for it. If you want to continue to get support for CS3 or do not have the money to upgrade to CS4, this may be a big deal and a reason not to upgrade.

A Minor complaint:

1 One of my time machine back ups for a co workers Mac was apparently corrupted by the upgrade. Luckily they did not have any old data they needed from that backup so I just made a new one with Snow Leopard that mounts just good, but this is something to be aware of. If you have a important time machine backup that you can not pay for to lose, I’d propose making a backup of the complete drive clone it using SuperDuper! or something like it.

     End of update

Snow Leopard will grow in usefulness as time passes. As I said earlier, once 3rd party applications start to be written to take benefit of advancements in the OS, the performance overhead will become more and more useful. Expect to wait 6 12 months for that to happen, but in the mean time at least you are enjoying speedier OS performance for an inexpensive price!
Nice New Features, But Far From Perfect.,
August 30, 2009

I upgraded my Leopard equipped late 2006 Black MacBook to Snow Leopard. I had it on pre order all week and delivered on release date. It does not boast a whole lot of new stuff to it, but I like the new features it does have, and I love the fact that it takes up so less hard drive space on my MacBook I gained an amazing 29 gigabytes of space. I also noticed a pretty good speed increase after upgrading.

I really love the new Dock Expose, and how I can look at just one specific application in Expose instead of all the open windows in any given space. It makes finding things many easier. I also like the fact that you may now resize your icons in the finder. Dock scrolling with magnification and cover flow have been smoothed out largely which makes it that more nice. Quicktime X is a pretty good movie recorder and the interface looks many better than last variant of Quicktime. Many other refinements are pretty nice also.

64 bit support is amazing and I can see a difference in the apps that are now running in 64 bit see the Activity Monitor for the apps that are running in 64 bit. Things just run smoother and faster.

Now, as far as many drawbacks of the system, this 1st one is a big one: when redesigning Safari, they made Safari and its plugins and totally separate processes, supposedly to enhance the stability of Safari. Possibly it did this, but consequently, it eats up far more CPU power than the last iteration. This can result in your system slowing down, and I am running into serious issues with heating when using Flash as an example, it eats up nearly 70 of the CPU and I am running around 150F, which is somewhat dangerous. As well, there was many lost rearward compatibility with Snow Leopard, and for me, most notable with VMWare Fusion. I hope this is addressed soon.

So could I think about this a needed upgrade? Not really. If an upgrade is regarded as, it should be more for the speed increase than for new features, as most users will not take benefit of many if any of the improvements in the interface itself. But, the speed increase and freeing up of hard drive space are nice. As well, if you have programs that may have compatibility issues I’d most likely recommend holding off and waiting for these to be resolved before upgrading. If you do not have these issues, go ahead and upgrade, but, I believe you may want to do so with caution, and keep a copy of your Leopard install disk useful in case you have to revert should you run into any of the issues mentioned.
&nbsp,&nbsp,

        Fun:4.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

I own every single Sims game, and had owned all of the Sim City series also. With that said, let us move on to the review of EA’s new product, The Sims 3: World Adventures. I had high anticipation because I’m used to the big amounts of new things we got with the Sims one & Sims two expansions, which were offered at lower costs. But, don’t let this deter you. While you may not get a ton of new things, you do get adventure as promised. The pros:

1. You do get to travel, and there are objectives when you do so. I did not care for the way the Sims 2: Bon Voyage, did not really give you a goal. It was go to a new place, relax, stay for a big total of time and leave. World Adventures gives you objectives, while allowing you to visit different places if you could like. And in time you may be able to purchase a vacation home and use up more time there. You must build up your “visa” to have stays longer than three days in each place, and you do this by completing adventures. I had a great time wandering around the maze like tombs, and keeping away from torching myself.

2. There are indeed some more things, and they have country themes. In the past not many games we have really only had Asian oriented items, I love decorating the house with flaming chandeliers like the ones seen in the tombs.

3. I haven’t found all of the new social interactions, but so far there have been about three.

4. Basements! Yes you heard right, you may be able to really have basements to your house now, not only that but you may be able to build “tombs” under your home.

5. Some new traits and music tastes.

6. Your sim, when they learn a new song, may come home singing which I find cute.

Cons:

1. As with any EA game that just came out, there are glitches. The 1st time I started up, my sim was no where to be found. The plumbob has been deformed and I could not preform any actions. I uninstalled it, the problem still stayed. So I uninstalled the base game, that fixed that problem. Then I could not get expertise or purchase skill books. This was seemingly a clash between the new patch that is needed it looks. And game mods and many custom content. I removed by mods and custom content, now the game runs like a charm.

2. The loading time is much longer than with The Sims three base game. I have lots of memory, a new graphics card and lots of RAM. I’m above the obliged specifications with everything, but only somewhat. If you’re working with the bare minimums or just a little above, it may run a little slower.

3. I noticed it can be my computer that many of the graphics aren’t as clear, like a blurry pixelation of my sims eye sockets.

4. Still no memories.

5. Many of the new features have been hard for me to find, like the collection for photographs which is a nice new bonus.

6. Toddlers & pregnant women can not travel. I assume this is because it could be unsafe for them to be caught on fire, but it still stinks left home.

7. Many people have been having many more problems, like the game not loading, codes not working and games not saving. I have personally not had any of these problems.

I will update this as I continue to play, but so far the adventures have made to get the game worth it. I really enjoy having the objectives and feeling like I am attaining something for my sim.
And now the Sims franchise falls to EAs iron fist!,
December 2, 2009

        Fun:1.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

Like many others with The Sims Series. I have been a fan of The Sims since they 1st came out with “The Sims” and “The Sims 2″ And I could expect that with such a money making franchise as The Sims, that EA could NOT do what they have been doing. But they did.

DO NOT purchase THIS GAME!!!! it’ll destroy anything you have done in The Sims three so far and is buggy beyond belief!

If you want to know how I really feel. Then think about a time you got that feeling in the pit of your stomach, that made you feel sick because you had just been blatantly ripped off or betrayed. That is how I feel!

It isn’t a VACATION expansion. It’s an ADVENTURES “add on” taking a fun non linear game and making it into a console game where you really have to go from point a to point b.

It is just downright inhuman what EA does with employees, and how it impacts the finished product.

They constantly lay off hard workers because they’re scared that if anybody works on a game for too long that they may attempt to leave and start their own company. So EA moves development teams in six week to six month shifts. Rotating them from project to project. That means that every time they “rotate” the new team has to somehow pick up where the old team left off, relearning and trying to figure out what goed on before the “rotation”. And this creates big ISSUES. EA also rushes things to release dates against the development teams wishes to hold off release so they can make a more polished product. EA doesn’t care! they’re all about the almighty bottom dollar! So what you get is a half finished, problem causing game, that otherwise could have been great.

Now, onto the MICRO TRANSACTIONS!!! Not only do you pay for this overpriced, half finished game.. But you’ll have to pay to “unlock” things and features that were otherwise already in the game, but hidden, because selling millions of The Sims three was not enough for EA, they now want to charge you $20 a pop of REAL WORLD MONEY to get 1000 “SIM POINTS” so you may be able to have the paired sets and things and features that should have been in the game in the 1st place. You may be able to see forum postings and reviews about the REAL COST of The Sims three here on amazon.Com

This is the 1st expansion. If you may be able to call it that, as I see it more as a step backwards. All The Sims games have had expansions that do, in fact, make the base game better and better. Like adding PETS, and a NIGHTLIFE, and real SEASONS with rain and snow and so on and so forth. The base games also had a great deal of content to start with, from tons of paired furniture to pools with slides and diving boards, hot tubs, and musical things that you may make your Sim garage band with. Then enter the Sims three with NONE OF THAT STUFF!!!

Then enter The Sims three World Adventures, Still not adding anything other than a ONE TIME adventure for your chosen Sims. Yes ONE TIME! Still no vacation. Still no hot tubs. Still no diving boards. Still no pets. No seasons. I can say it was quite fun playing through the new expansion with one of my Sims. But here is one of the many problems. My old towns and Sims have been destroyed with the addition of this expansion. Where my big town with tons of custom houses and Sims once stood are now blue property sized holes. If that was not bad enough. I create a new town and a new Sim household to go on ADVENTURES. I’m having many fun exploring and collecting goodies, and enjoying the new themes and whatnot. Till I get bored and choose to attempt ADVENTURES with a different Sim. This part makes me mad. Well more mad after losing my Sim town. I can not DO ADVENTURES AGAIN! Yes that’s right! Once you go through the tombs and discover everything with one Sim, any other Sims you attempt to do it with won’t get the same bonuses and benefits as the 1st one! All the paths remain open and revealed, all the doors stay open, all the traps found and disabled, all the ONE TIME things don’t return, as well as a obliged item called “Pengu’s Axe”. Over this is a disappearing stock glitch where every now , then, things in your Sims “backpack” up and delete themselves!

Also, get used to seeing “Error Code 13″ and “Error Code 16″ when trying to save your games. When this happens, the save game is corrupted and everything you have done has just been destroyed, and you now have to go into the game save directory and HOPE that there’s still a working backup copy you may be able to restore with many less that user friendly editing.

I could go on and on about other glitches and bugs, and the fact they have Day One micro transactions on or before the release date of this expansion showing that they’re intentionally leaving things out of the game just to make more cash off the people dumb enough to pony forth said cash.

So that means that only ONE SIM HOUSEHOLD and one Sim household ONLY can get the full experience of the adventures. Any others after that just walk through the already explored tombs with nothing to do and nothing that could be considered an real “Adventure.” So unless you want to constantly create whole new towns and start over again just to reset the Adventures. I say leave this game off your holiday gift list. At least till EA pulls their heads out of their donkeys and fixes the glaring issues with this game.

I am 27 years old, I build high end gaming computers, and I have only had to call tech support seven times in my life. Once ten years ago for Windows ME, and six times in the last six months! Each of those six times for separate EA games that either did not work because of something in the game itself, or that relies on many sort of stable connection with ea servers, or was so flawed and buggy that it annoyed me to the point I really broke down and called them.

As a video game fan, I could rather wait a longer time and PAY MORE for a better, completely polished and finished product, than to have many half done turd that needs a year worth of patches and editing to make barely playable.

I can not play The Sims three anymore because of this expansion and it is big glitches and errors, and I’m having serious thoughts about purchasing ANYTHING from EA ever again!

Do NOT, I repeat, don’t purchase this till they have the bugs worked out and it works. It may be a fun game if it could work properly but it does not.

I can’t just save my game anymore, I have to “Save As” every time , then the game will still on occasion crash while saving. It also randomly crashes just throughout gameplay. I read on the official forum that this may be caused by high FPS so I used my nifty Nvidia V sync as suggested and nope, it still crashes away many, many times.

There are reports of TONS of other bugs which I have been lucky enough to not have happen to me still. Many people report their Sims totally vanishing or of an “evil twin” that shows up when they come back from visiting one of the three countries. They have random spouses and kids they never had before. The list goes on and on. Bad, stupid bugs here.

On the positive side, the places themselves are gorgeous. But, the adventuring you do there gets so repetitve and boring. I have only had this one day and am already thinking, “How many times should I explore tombs to look for stupid loot?”
Norton has done it again, nearly perfect!,
September 30, 2009

This is my 5th year of using NIS to protect my home computer and laptop. With the obvious enhancements last variant, Norton came back with a bang. While NIS2010 still has many faults, the good trend looks to continue this year also.

Installation: Installation was fast alike to NIS2009. It does require a restart which looks to be the case for most virus protection software. Norton for many reason wants us to download and install parental control individually. Just a hazel. If you’re an present NIS user you may be able to upgrade from Norton’s upgrade web site before deciding to buy the new variant. The upgrade will keep your 2009 subscription and your license will be retained also. NOTE: If you install from CD, your old license will be over written.

Performance: I do not think NIS2010 is a resource hog. Norton also has performance meters where you may be able to check how most of the system resources are used by Norton. It looks NIS 2010 uses most system resources only throughout a complete scan. NIS2010 upgrade virus signatures on the background throughout idle time just like NIS2009. So you dont feel that it exists. Fast scans throughout idle times also seem to be pretty fast. I have not noticed any loss of performance in the one week that I have been using NIs2010.

Virus protection: depending on tests by PC world and CNET Norton is only behind the not well recognized G DATA internet security in virus detection. I have not used G DATA so I cant compare them. But, NIS has gotten better at malware detection. It did detect some malware that adaware and other security software that I use e.G. Advanced system care. NIS2009 missed some these malware.

Network protection: though NIS claims that when NIS is installed in all PCs on your network, it can detect and keep a reliable network, it hasn’t worked for me. NIS detected my skype phone ofcourse did not protect it, but did not detect my other PC on the network that also has NIS2010 installed. I’m not sure if this ‘trust’ is of any use to me anyway.

Internet security: Norton identified websites that you visit amazon, bank and ccard websites for example as reliable ones depending on IP address and other data. So you may be safe you aren’t entering your password on a phishing web site. It’s useful for me. I generally look for the ‘trusted’ sign from both Firefox and NIS before entering my passwords.

Password manager: I dont know if I’ll trust NIS to be my password manager. You need just one password for Norton and it can manage your other passwords and form filling info. But, it looks to be easy to break in to NIS to get the password manager’s password list. Though the hacker needs physical access to your computer to do this, it’s a concern if your laptop gets stolen as an example. NIS2010 offers to have the password manager’s list live on removable media which is a somewhat safer alternative. Norton safe search which identifies safe websites on your serach list is useful, but google can do this also.

Over all, it’s a good virus protection for your PC, checks files on the fly, can scan emails and attachemnts, IM text and links. Not good for password management and parental control.

&nbsp,&nbsp,

While most of Symantec’s competitors seem to be struggling with software “bloat”, it is good to see one of the big guys heading back to more of a simplified approach.

I installed the software on two PCs so far.One a Vista final having no present security software, and the other a Windows XP with McAffee’s product. The installer suggested removing the McAffee product which I did and the installation was likewise uneventful on both of my systems from there on. It does force a reboot, and between the initial install plus downloading any updates, it took longer than I projected about half an hour end to end.

As for performance, there’s a slight but noticeable increase in the reboot time when Norton starts up possibly another 30 seconds total. And if you are sensitive to performance, you may also tell when the product is updating virus signatures in the background, or performing one of its fast virus scans.

The basic anti virus protection seemed good. Not too obtrusive, though it is hard to really assess the quality of the virus scanning, since I have still to really meet a virus. I tend to be cautious, but still, being one of the better recognized merchandise, Norton gives you a sense of security in case you do something silly and let an infected file in.

I did not activate the network protection features that come with the product. I tend to rely instead on a router with a strong firewall capability, , then I keep my “internal” network pretty open. The product did detect some networked apps I use, stopping to ask my permission before letting them open whatever ports they used. Could have been nice to set this sort of policy globally, rather than having to bump into applications one at a time.

One feature I could liked to see is the capability to designate one of my PCs as the “master” for policy decisions and updates, with my other PCs driven from the master. For example, on kids PCs, I’d like to set a rigorous policy, record any strange activity, and know that my policies can only be changed from my central master computer. Big corporate AV systems do this could be nice to have the same capability at home.

Like the network protection, I also did not find myself using the password management features of the product. My PC is a ThinkPad with the fitted fingerprint scanner, and I favor to use the IBM security software, which gives this same function. The biometric device fingerprint reader looks more secure, and it could be nice if Norton provided integrated support for these types of authentication devices.

The internet security feature is sort of useful, but if you know what you are doing, you may be able to do this on your by looking at a sites digital certificates. Norton automates this, telling you that it is okay to trust a specific site. Not sure I’d purchase the product just for this capability, but it is a nice add on feature.

Overall, I was happy to see that the product seemed to be pretty stable and to operate without all that much overhead. In comparison to some of the others I have tried, Norton is about the best mix of usability, capability and efficiency.

It’s sort of sad that we need this kind of software in today’s world.I’d rather be spending my money on software to make me more productive or entertained. But, if you accept that you need protection, Norton is as good a choice as any.
Norton Internet Security 2010,
October 6, 2009

By&nbsp,Ken “Pop” Kings Mountain, NC United States See all my reviews

I 1st bought the new Norton Internet Security 2009 this spring and installed it on one computer notebookthat had been using CA Internet Security and one server that used Trend Micro IS 2007. The performance difference between Norton IS 2009 and the CA product was dramatic, not as much so with Trend Micro. With Norton IS 2009 my computers ran much faster and had far fewer “issues” with security software on both systems. I received an upgrade to Norton IS 2010 as an IS 2009 user at no charge and the installation on two machines went flawlessly. I’m impressed with the smaller footprint of IS 2009/10 and the tools it offers. One complaint is the long 1 weekinterval between full scans if you decide to use auto settings. It does fast scans every day but needs the capability to schedule full scan intervals as part of the auto settings. A novice picking manual scans could inadvertently leave their computer at a greater risk if not configured properly.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

        Fun:1.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

The perks of purchasing the PC variant as indicated by Infinity Ward IW:

1. Text chatting! Now you may be able to text chat to your buddies in game while online, what great innovation!

2. Adjustable graphics setting gotta give them points for adding that feature, while console users are stuck with their 720/1080 resolution, you may be able to max it up all the way based on your hardware! Amazing stuff.Although every game has had this feature since the beginning of PC gaming.

3. The capability to use your mouse and keyboard! Now you may be able to unplug your xbox controller and use your computer accessories for a much more correct FPS experience!

4. You will have a great smooth time connecting to IWNet, its so perfect, it will give you XBox Live error messages!

Now, the negatives:

1. You are paying more for an inferior product. $60 vs $50. The consoles have a valid excuse for charging more $10.00 goes to the console maker Sony or Microsoft, Activision is just being greedy here, really quite unacceptable, particularly in today’s economy.

2. Dedicated servers removed do not get me started, I am sure you have heard of the petition which is nearing 200,000 signatures to re include dedicated servers. We are left with a awful online experience. I played the 1st Modern Warfare MW on the PS3 which had peer to peer online play and it was disastrous. Expect drop outs and poor performance. The host of the game will generally have the advantage because they have the better latency.

3. No mods. This is surprising because so many other liked games were developed from mods as well as Counterstrike, Team fortress two and Left four Dead. The only reason I can think of why IW/Activision could want to do such a thing could be to charge for content afterward on. I remember paying for three maps for the 1st MW and to tell you the truth, it really was not worth it.

4. Steam obliged. When you install the game you’re obliged to install the Steam platform and link it to an e mail address, and your Steam username. This makes reselling the game beside impossible.

5. Feels and plays more like a Modern Warfare 1.5 then a Modern Warfare 2.0, the graphics are alright for todays standard, but I expected many more from IW for a two year development cycle.

6. Short single player. Since they have gimped the multiplayer part, and the single player can about be finished in 6 7 hours, I propose you rent this on the console if you have one.

7. Multiplayer only lets nine vs nine 18 player matches. MW1 lets up to 64 does more mean more enjoyable? No, not essentially, but at least there’s choice and server admins were able to set it to their liking.

Infinity Ward have really let their fans down. The multi player made the original spectacular, with the elimination of dedicated servers, competitive and just play is dead.

Business schools should take note because this could make a great case study on how a company ruined one of the most anticipated entertainment product in such a short total of time. MW2 was literally a license to print money for Activison/IW. With such a awful management choice, reinstating dedicated servers will be the only hope to redeem themselves in the eyes of their buyers but I think this fiasco won’t be easily forgotten.

I propose you all save your money and get Battlefield Bad Company two instead, the producers have said they’ll be behind dedicated servers. The beta should be out for all systems soon, and the game will be releasing in March.

    Update 11/18/09

Theres hope yet! Hackers released a patch so you may be able to start/join a dedicated server, its disgusting that this has to come from the underground scene and not Activision/IW. It looks that the hacked copies “freely” available over the Internet is the superior variant.

Hackers have also found hidden modes via the console world Thermonuclear War, One Flag CTF and VIP mode future downloadable content already in the game? How low you have fallen Activision/IW.

don’t purchase this game. It’s a total waste of your hard earned money. Just read many of the reviews and you’ll see this is nothing more than a gimped console port. Everything that makes this game a PC game is missing.

I could recommend waiting for Battlefield Bad Company two for the PC instead. It keeps most of what is still desirable in a PC game.

        Fun:1.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

When Call of responsibility arrived on the PC scene, we were given an acute World War two 1st person shooter that blew away all other alike shooters at that time. For once, Medal of Honor had been paired and beaten at own game. The sequel to Call of responsibility, United Offensive, brought one of the best multiplayer World War two experiences ever seen in a game to the PC platform. Both titles were only

On PC, I could like to emphasize.

Then came Call of responsibility two and the Xbox 360. Since that point in time, Call of responsibility on PC never been the same. We were handed a game that looked better than the original but was missing in multiplayer content and had minimally improved single player. By the time the developers had stuck a “3″ until the end of the title, the PC platform was nowhere to be found. Totally abandoned. Left to dry.

But PC gamers were thrown a couple bones with the releases of Call of responsibility 4: Modern Warfare and the last PC Call of responsibility game, World at War. , we had the games back on our platform. They were not the best in the world, but they were hard experiences all around. Again, the single player had dimwitted respawning A.I. Foes and did little to give us an groundbreaking experience, but the multiplayer in each games provided hard, replay value packed shooting that could hardly be looked down upon.

And now, here we’re again, going through rough times. She and I just are not making ends meet anymore, if you know what I mean. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare two is a complete shame to the PC platform. Yes, unlike some number of years ago in the case of Call of responsibility 3, we really have a Call of responsibility game on our platform and for that we possibly should be grateful, but with that being said, it is hard to deal with what exactly is happening here. There are so many negative points bordering Modern Warfare 2, I could most likely be sprouting grey hairs on my head by the time I has been finished pointing out each of them. Instead, I will get directly to the points. And there are many of them, so bare with me.

What should usually be a $50 game at launch is $60. , we are being charged as much as the console kids for this game. What should usually be a PC optimized port with support for dedicated servers, mods to change player limitations and gameplay experiences, and more, is instead one in which we dont have dedicated servers, no modification tools, no capability to extend the maximum total of players in a server, no capability to record demos for the sake of footage and server moderation and governance, and no distinctive PC features other than mouse control, text chat, and the capability to change graphical alternatives. Yes, most of which were present in Wolfenstein 3D in 1992. And now, the icing on the cake: When we are not struggling to play the online part of the game while leeching off another bum’s connection, we can instead feast on a handful of hours, rinse & repeat single player experience that features little to no replay value caused by its linear, scripted gameplay.

When it is all said and done, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare two is the last straw for us PC gamers. We deserve more, because Call of responsibility originated on our platform and if not for us, Modern Warfare two could not exist today. The heart and soul of Call of responsibility should still remain implanted in PCs all over the world, but instead Infinity Ward has taken the path of ignorance and downright disrespect towards those who helped make their franchise possible. For these deeds, they can shove their money being horded from console gamers where the sun does not shine.

I want a divorce.
TOP 500 REVIEWER
&nbsp,&nbsp,

I will admit, I have been running Windows seven for six months now: the preproduction variant of it and just have upgraded to the gold code. So I have quite some experience with the operating system. Let us get to the nitty gritty:

Should you upgrade from Windows Vista? YES! I mean it upgrade today.

Windows seven is quite simply faster, more stable, boots faster, goes to sleep faster, comes back from sleep faster, manages your files better and over that it is beautiful to look at and easy to use. The preproduction variant of Windows seven was better than my Vista with SP2.

Should you upgrade from Windows XP? Maybe, but for different reasons.

XP is a good operating system and if you do not have to add new hardware or software, XP is good. But, XP is old as an operating system. Also chances are that if you are running XP, you may not meet the minimum prerequisites for Windows seven check the compatibility site at Microsoft to see if your system will support Windows 7. That said, Windows seven is light years ahead of Windows XP by functionality, easy use, etc to me it is worth purchasing a new system.

64 bit or 32 bit?

If you do not know what I am talking about, that is ok skip this section. If you have a core2 duo or core two quad or a multi cpu machine, go with the 64 bit OS, it handles memory and the CPUs much better. If you have a single core CPU, one CPU or run special programs that require 32bit, then stick with 32 bit for now.

BEFORE INSTALLATION:

I recommend you have:

A core two duo or core two quad machine

4gig of RAM That’s about $50 in today’s market

Good hard drive with 200 gig it does not need that much but that is another $50

Back up your files to a USB drive like Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 movable External Hard Drive WDME5000TN Midnight Black

Check to be sure your computer is matched with Windows 7

INSTALLATION:

Installation was straight forward. You put in the CD and reboot your machine. You may have to enter your bios and enable the “boot from CD” choice. Once the machine reboots a nice screen comes up to guide you through the installation. You have the choice to upgrade your PC or do a clean installation. I did an upgrade and it brought in all of my files and settings from my windows Vista system. It worked great.

The upgrade did take about two hours for me so certainly think about.

I noticed that early on in the installation the operating system went out to Microsoft’s site to look for the new and greatest updates, so I think this should help Microsoft react quickly to any hiccups with compatibility.

WHAT does not WORK:

The driver from my old HP Inkjet printer for 2001 does not work on Windows seven so there are many things that won’t transition. I had to use a generic HP driver which does not give me the quality that I got from an injet so in general, I am up and running with that printer but I am degraded on the inkjet front. That said, I newly upgraded to a HP CP2025DN Color LaserJet Printer that I love so no real loss there. I will probably pick up a cheap inkjet for the sporadic photo that I may have to print. Everything else upgraded.

BENEFITS

Faster boot time

Faster go to sleep

Faster wakeup

Faster about 20 to 30 faster at running applications than my Vista seriously but they are my results without any benchmarks or anything like that, just seeing how fast Adobe Illustrator loads, and how fast all the applications respond

Joining wireless networks is much easier

The interface is just plain beautiful

My wallpapers are now a slideshow that may be set to change every not many minutes I’m not stuck with the same picture

Gadgets they are great little small applications that you may drag onto your desktop. I have a weather gadget and a calendar gadget on my desktop that tell me

Better taskbar management hovering over the taskbar icons shows me mini windows of what is running

Better file management I can manage my files into Libraries that are sortable not only by type but by folder or another data. It is great! I can browse through my presentations or illustrator files!

Windows Media appears to be smoother which I love.

You get many virus protection and firewall with Windows seven but think about something more complete like McAfee Total Protection 3User 2010. Yes, it will make your computer run a bit slower but

CONS:

Many older programs may not work and many drivers may not be available like my inkjet driver.

Other than that, there are not too many drawbacks to Windows seven it is a great OS.

WHICH variant am I supposed to GET?

I got the final variant because I have clients who ask, “is your hard drive encrypted?” I wanted to be able to say yes and have sensitive data encrypted one of my computer volumes Bitlocker is only available in the final variant. Final also will include Multilanguage support.

If you are a home user that does not do many of networking, you may think about just the home premium edition. If you are using a laptop and connect to networks at work, you may want the Professional variant of the operating system to assist you with domain joining. Also Windows Professional gives you the choice to run applications in XP mode if you have old applications you may be able to use that nifty feature. I already have one application running in XP mode it is nifty to run an old application.

NOTE:

The box holds both the 32 bit and 64 bit OS.

OVERALL:

It’s hard to write a complete review on an complete operating system so I did not attempt I am sure magazines will devote complete articles to the operating system and some number of books will come out. My goal here is just to give everyone a glimpse of what I have found to date with this new OS. I do hope this helped you in making a choice.

Hats off to Microsoft on Windows 7. It is more of a refined Windows Vista than an completely new operating system but it has been needed. Thank you.

REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

I have now installed this on three Vista computers, and I must say that the result is underwhelming. By now, we can expect computer reporters to hype any Windows release, and to certain extent they’re right seven does work better, but not that much better or differently from Vista if you installed all updates and security releases from Microsoft. I had to uninstall anti virus and selected other programs, many of which didn’t have listings in the “Programs and Features” Control Panel section. All of my upgrades took two to three hours, reporters stating 45 minute upgrade times must not have had many programs installed on their computers. Once programs identified as possible problems had been removed, the upgrades finished uneventfully, and it works OK once installed.

Value wise, I think that the single computer upgrade is a loser for Vista users at current price levels. If you have two or more computers, the Home Premium 3 computer “family” upgrade is borderline. I’ll pass judgement on XP once I upgrade my one left over XP computer. Honestly, this is what should have been the Vista release, so we have paid top dollar for Vista, then close to top dollar for an incremental upgrade. In the meantime, Apple is charging $29 for the OS X Snow Leopard upgrade $49 for five computers!. That is most likely the right price for this Win seven upgrade. If users ignore the hype and wait a bit, I suspect that the price for single computer upgrades may drop like a rock.

Received my order without a hitch release date delivery.

I opted for the Clean install, wanted to take benefit of switching to the 64 bit variant of home premium.

The install was easy and straightforward. The needed drivers auto installed and it told of a problem driver and went and downloaded it directly from Dell, after clicking through two advisory windows.

The whole expirience was painless and the most pleasent install of a operating system from microsoft, ever!

It loads blazing fast, software runs smooth and downloads from the internet seem to be faster.

The clean install has been performed on a Dell Studio 1535 and the task was flawless!

Total install counting downloading anti virus software and email took about three hours.

Very, satisfied!

        Fun:5.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

Dragon Age is a kind of game that’s becoming increasingly rare: a immersive single player RPG with an interface obviously intended for the PC. It is easy to sling around the word “immersive” at any game that looks pretty, but DA is not messing around the world of Ferelden shows a unified sense of design and depth that blows famously vast games like Oblivion out of the water. Coupled with steadily excellent writing and across the board quality character design down to comparatively unimportant NPCs, the game really does feel like it is reacting to your choices dynamically from the beginning, and how you play your character can have surprisingly subtle effects on the way the story unfolds.

Graphically, the game’s a little uneven. All the design elements are there, and it has lots of high quality textures and strong environmental visuals especially fire effects. The polygons themselves, especially on character faces, are a little simpler than you’d expect from a 2009 game. In general, the game looks about on level with Oblivion, though the visual distinctiveness and design ethic of regions and characters are considerably better. Animation stands out as a strong suit here, especially throughout the game’s recurrent dialog sequences, with none of the dead eyed staring or strange walk cycles that plagued other RPGs like Fallout 3.

Gameplay is pretty straightforward, and much in keeping with last Bioware titles like Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. You control a party of up to four characters, each of whom develops a plethora of useful abilities to keep track of. The inclusion of a minor programming element very much in keeping with the gambit system from last Fantasy XII will let you set up some default actions on each character so you are not stuck frantically switching between them to be sure they drink their curative potions, but battles usually require many degree of tactical planning. Setting up ambushes and planning your party approach to play to strengths is needed to get through many tougher regions. The interface is, shockingly, obviously tailor made for the PC the console variants have their own interfaces intended from the bottom up and are seemingly easier games to let for the sacrifice in easy access to skills. You have an crazy number of quick access slots, and almost the complete keyboard is bound to one thing or another. It is the kind of interface that has not been in vogue since before the PS2 came out. The game is very linear, though the recurrent and varied dialog alternatives give it the feel of a more free roaming game, and it is tempting to go back and replay big chunks of the game just to see how the complex and dynamic conversations will play out. The major downside is that there is no easy way to level grind, which is to the game’s advantage to a point no tedious circling around killing wolves but sometimes means you may be able to get in over your head.

What the game sacrifices by sandbox free roaming it more than makes up with in the excellent writing and characterization. An absurd attention to detail and across the board excellent voice acting breathes many of life into the game’s conversations, which make up a important chunk of gameplay. Characters are very varied and the interplay between them is a big draw, a trademark of Bioware’s games, but Dragon Age has many of the most likable characters I have ever seen in a video game and the excellent performances from talents like Tim Curry, Kate Mulgrew and Claudia Black really put the game a notch above. The game’s pretty generic on the surface fantasy world is livened up by some important details as an example, the elves in Dragon Age are a big underclass of servants.

It’s really hard to find things to level complaints against in this game. One petty gripe is Morrigan’s visual design her character is one of the game’s strongest, and she’s great personality and many smart writing, but visually she’s a pair of giant breasts with a cloth dressed improbably over them. Other women in the game are treated with a bit more restraint, though, and female armor is gratifyingly sensible. Another issue is that it may be hard to manage battles on the fly, and precisely aiming at enemies with expertise usually requires tactical pausing just to line the cursor up over their comparatively small active regions. It is a petty annoyance, but the game obviously was not supposed to be played Diablo style anyway.

A not many other things to know about the game:

The game is usually DRM free, and ships only with a simple disc check. EA has a repute for fouling up its customers’ computers with DRM malware, but DA looks to be free of those problems.

If Dragon Age were a movie, it could be rated R. I do not remember ever seeing any swearing, oddly, but the game is rife with violent imagery, very black themes and frank sexuality including a few of comparatively tasteful sex scenes and sporadic demonic nudity. The game handles all of it with maturity and depth, but it is obviously not meant for kids, and parents of younger teens should be cautious.

Overall, Dragon Age is one of the strongest games to come out in recent memory, and is another installment in Bioware’s rising resume of superbly written RPGs. Players looking for a fast paced hack and slash “rpg” should look elsewhere, but anybody who likes deep and elegant plot development, memorable characters and excellent role playing will love this game.

        Fun:5.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

Before diving into the review, a brief summary: Dragon Age origin is the epic role playing game that many of us have been waiting for since we 1st fell in love with the genre with the classic Baldur’s Gate. It drops the player into an immersive fantasy world rich with lore and compelling settings. The aesthetics and score are as pleasing and engrossing as a good cinematic feature or novel. And while it’s spectacular in just about every way, it isn’t without its faults mostly technical in nature, and affects players with particular computer hardware as far as I can tell I will explain more later. In short, if you are a fan of the genre you’ll do yourself a favor by buying and experiencing this game. I have never felt more comfy proposing a RPG to the Internet at large as I do now with Dragon Age. I’ll swear upon whatever holy text you favor that it is the best single player RPG to come along since Fallout 3. If you are not a theist, I suppose I could place my hand upon a photograph of Carl Sagan before making the same solemn vow. But I digress. Onto the review. Parts I found positive are preceded by a +, negative parts a .

GAME PLAY

+ Dragon Age hereby called “DA” plays like a perfect hybrid of turn based and real time RPGs of yore. The controls are a mash up of overhead tactical maneuvering ala Baldur’s Gate and the third person RTS like mechanics found in Knights of the Old Republic. You control character motion with either the WASD keyboard directions familiar to MMO and FPS players, or via mouse click navigation concurrently. You may be able to play from a third person perspective to get a full view of the world around you, or zoom out into an overhead tactical view to aid in unit placement and positioning in which the graphics take on the painted look and feel of Baldur’s Gate a nice touch. The camera can be controlled with either the keyboard or mouse. All around, stellar.

+ The UI makes a powerful and elegant use of economy of space it fits many into a little, all while looking and playing very well

+ Character customization is as rich if not richer than any other RPG hybrid or pure RPG on the market present or past. You have standard archetypes warrior, mage, rogue which alone have different “trees” or avenues of progression focusing upon things like weapon preference sword + shield, dual wield, two handed, etc or general and crafting expertise. Also there are expert classes that excel at particular vocations such as the mage nullifying Templar, form changing mage, or crit happy Duelist to name a few. Over this, special abilities and vocations can be unlocked by finding rare things or special quests often a mix of both

+ Combat is greatly tactical, taking into account elevation, range, “crowd control” mechanics, and vast synergy between the abilities of your party members

+ A deep plans system may be utilized, in which you assign a custom AI to each of your characters established upon a range of requirements and situations. As an example, you may be able to tell your mage that every time they are bordering by two or more melee mobs, they cast some crowd control spell. If a party member has less than 50 health, heal them. Or have your tank taunt mobs that attack the mage. Or have the rogue stun the mobs your major character is fighting. Etc.

Melee centric characters draw from a pool of stamina to do their different abilities and group enhancing expertise. This pool feels restricted, when you invest heavily into the stat that fundings more stamina. It is more hampered by injuries that your characters will sustain, on occasion, while fighting which are treated with injury kits or with resting at your camp. Hopefully this will be tweaked in a future patch.

STORY, PRESENTATION, & SETTING

+ The apparently hackneyed story youre the last in a long line of sacred warriors who’s mission is to vanquish a specific foe quickly unfolds into a compelling, immersive, and interesting tale that competitors those found in quality fantasy novels and movies. Each race, town, city, and region are wholly distinctive and diverse from the political intrigue of Dwarven society to the juxtaposition of the city and forest Elves and the layers of complexity involved therein. I can not go too much into this without possibly spoiling the many excellent stories. Suffice to it is superb.

+ While the world is not theoretically “open”, being divided into many instanced zones if you will, it’s still really vast. Most regions are considerably big. There’s no bound to draw distance: your looking at distance is generally to infinity, and most zones may be completely explored to the smallest nook and cranny and it pays to do so. You unlock more regions as the game progresses and the regions differ depending upon your origin and choices, and there is a complete underground zone also to the zone all non Dwarves start inside.

+ The story is generally evolving and changing. Your most minor, or big, decisions about plot or character interactions will have lasting repercussions that may not come to fruition for many time. You may be able to build intimate relationships with characters, and being an active participant in the dialogue and lore pay big dividends in the end

+ Replayability is high due mainly to the aforementioned dynamic story, also as the “Origins” part of the DA title: different race and class mixes have different starting stories, and merge into the in general arc in different ways and at different times

PERFORMANCE

+ The games looks, sounds, and plays perfectly well on middling hardware

If you own a dual or quad core AMD CPU, expect slowly rising load times as your session time increases the longer you play and the more you transition between zones, the longer the load times become. From five to seven seconds at 1st, upwards of five minutes after 45 minutes to an hour of play. This may be resolved by restarting the game, which literally only takes about 20 seconds. But still, it is frustrating, and many people are reporting it on the official forums. Hopefully it’ll be patched.

The 1st PC patch was some a goof: the new build included a newer variant of the Visual C++ 2005 runtime, while the retail variant had an older build. The result was that many people could not launch the game after patching. A trivial issue for the computer savvy I just checked my event logs and saw the issue then patched, but the lay person could dont have idea what is going on. After days Bioware has still to react officially with the evident fix, leaving it to the community to resolve. That behavior and communication casts doubt upon the level of commitment Bioware has in regards to DA from a technical support perspective.

Overall, the not many technical issues are far outweighed by the in general quality of the game. I could supply a more in depth review, but I’m honestly scared that I will accidentally spoil something, as this game is ridiculously vast. Purchase this game. You won’t be disappointed.

        Fun:5.0 out of five stars&nbsp,

1st things first: in the past I chastised EA some times for its release of cookie cutter games, crippled with atrocious DRM schemes. In all fairness, I now have to say this: DRAGON AGE: origin IS A GAMER’s DREAM! it’s an excellent game and it comes FREE of any DRM insanity. Thank you EA for listening to your customers let’s only hope this new trend holds..

This is one of those games that are easy to control, a delight to roam through and fun to play at no end.

I am a big cRPG fan and can not remember such a great companion/squad cRPG since the Baldur’s Gate Saga. And to tell you the truth, this is the game I dreamed of being able to play one day while playing BG yeah, by now we all know that NEVERWINTER NIGHTS never delivered.

There are about a dozen gender/race/class/background choices and a great many mixes in forming your party. The armor and the weapons are very made and everything shows on your characters. And the graphics are really beautiful! you must see the generating of flames to believe them.

Nevertheless, what really stands out is the gameplay. Every fight is a puzzle to be solved, pausing ever so frequently to reallocate enemies to the best suited party members a feature I loved in BG!. Of course one can generally turn off the autopause feature and let the AI take over the rest of your party and turn the game into an hack&slash action RPG not exactly my cup of tea but, hey, it is still nice to know it is there.

Finally, this is a game made just like the classics in many ways, as well as length. I’m now playing the game for over 20 hours and I feel that I barely scraped the surface! DRAGON AGE: origin is one satisfying RPG!

My only gripe is this: I didn’t appreciate such short dialogue alternatives. Most fit a single line and more frequently than not they comprise of a couple of words. I like my RPGs to be wordy and challenging to my spoken imagination also and I want my characters to partake in the humor, not just provoke it or react to it. Remember the long dialogue alternatives in BG? Well, expect to find DRAGON AGE: origin more laconic.

I guess ten years of fast paced FPS and blitzkrieging RTS do take their toll.

The blood sprays, the swords clang and the spells explode. The animations are beautifully made and add many to both enjoyment and immersion. There’s a verse in Homer’s Iliad I love: “the warrior fell and his armor echoed around him” and I has been reminded of it many a times during the game.

This game will stay with you. Don’t miss on it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
