    5.0 out of five stars
I bought the SX20 because I had good luck with the SX10,
    September 4, 2009

By&nbsp,Kirk Tuck “Kirk Tuck” Austin, Texas See all my reviews

I shoot all types of stuff with all types of cameras. I’m a working photographer who shoots for marketing and corporate client also as to make pictures for my own books about photography. Over the last two years I have been using small cameras like the Canon G10 and the SX10 for more and more of my work. In the studio, shooting set up shots or small merchandise these cameras shine by dint of their easy to use Live View and increased depth of field. When I bought the SX ten it was for the long range of the zoom lens which meant I could shoot anything from a construction site to tight shots of the cabins at the top of the construction cranes. I have done many portraits with studio lights and an SX10 and they were also usable. I wish the SX ten and SX 20 had raw file capability but they do not. That just means I must be a bit more cautious about WB and contact. I have used the SX10 at outdoor swim meets and found that the lens performs better than projected right out until the end.

So, why the SX 20? Newly I have been asked to do more and more little video snippets for clients and for my publisher and while I like the results from the SX10 I wanted real HD video for the times that a medical practice asked for video clips for both their web site AND for power point and other uses. I wanted the extra detail for the times that they use the clips in projected presentations. The price point works.

I’ve spent a couple days testing the SX ten and the results are , good. The front mounted microphones are of high quality and the sound for most applications is satisfactory. Could I like a mike input? You bet! Does that sour the deal? Not in the least.

The image quality of the stills is just as good as the SX ten at low ISO’s and about 1/2 a stop better at 200 and 400. I will chalk that up to the new digic processor.

All in all the build quality and the easy operation make the camera a winner for me. These days clients are more interested in using pictures and video in a large range of multimedia and the SX 20 is a great tool for anything that is headed to the web. I still own conventional DLSR cameras and use them but left to my own devices I find the smaller sensor cameras to be greatly competent and usable.

With an SX20 and a G10 I feel like I can handle just about anything except shots that call for narrow depth of field. Conventional photographers may not want to hear that video is becoming a obliged skill but that will not make it go away. This camera is a cost efficient way to get your feet wet, find your way around and get your feet wet. I like it.

SX20 IS Great Hybrid Camera For Video And Stills,
    September 6, 2009

By&nbsp,B. Massey “massmanjr” TX United States See all my reviews

Let me start off by saying that I am not a professional photographer. My choice to buy the SX20 IS was depending on a want to get an excellent still shot camera, with high capacity zoom, that also had HD Video 720p potential. I began my research and spent many hours scouring the web to make an informed choice. I had narrowed my choice to the Canon SX20 IS and the Panasonic DMC FZ35.

Here are many of the key specifications of each camera:

Optical Zoom Canon: 20, Pana: 18

Still image files Canon: Not Raw, Pana: Raw

Articulating LCD Canon: Yes, Pana: No

720p HD video per two GB Canon: ten min 33 sec, Pana: 15 min

Video file format Canon: .Mov, Pana: AVCHD Lite

Battery Type: Canon: four AA, Pana: Li ion rechargeable

    Stereo Audio Both

    SD Card Storage Both

    ..

In the end I decided to go with Canon for some key reasons:

#1. The articulating LCD pull out, tilt/move was a key factor, as I wanted to be able to shoot from various angles. It came in useful soon the second time I used the camera I was able to whip out the LCD and get many decent shots at a football game when I had to increase the camera high over my head to shoot over the people standing in front of me.

#2. The capability to easily share video files. The .Mov file format is a more widely accepted format, which can be shared without processing/conversion. The files are accepted on sites like You Tube. The files may be played with Quicktime and other media players e.G. VLC. Though the Panasonic camera uses a format which is more compressed and lets more data to be stored on an SD card, the file format isn’t as large spread and not as easy to share with others, without converting the file.

#3. Buyer Reports rankings for last year’s model: Canon #1, Pana #5 SX10 IS & Pana DMC FZ28. I suspect the SX20 IS will follow the same trend this year when buyer Reports releases their test results for 2009.

#4. Canon takes AA batteries. This makes the camera somewhat heavier, but you will generally be able to get economical batteries in a pinch, without the need for purchasing a proprietary lithium ion battery. May I recommend Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries. I bought many new on Amazon. They’re excellent. I have not charged them still and I have taken 120 pictures and 40 minutes plus of 720p video. I have also played the pictures and movies on my TV/Projector and moved all files to my computer, using the same batteries, without charging them. And they’re “..still going.”

Here are many sample pictures taken with the SX20 IS. Think about that Flickr does not display the full, original picture which was taken in maximum resolution in auto mode. ..

I’ve taken many great up close family shots and macro shots. They look great and are in depth. I took many night/action pics with the flash and adjusted the shutter speed and ISO settings and the pictures looked great, given the conditions.

    ..

I apologize for the camera jitter in advance as I did not have a tri pod and I was in a tight area in the Stadium when I took the shots.

I must admit that I’m completely impressed with the video quality/resolution. I shot sample video from my one year old camcorder Panasonic SDR H40, a regular meaning hard drive camcorder and shot the same footage with the SX20 IS. The difference in quality amazed. Not only was the Canon much sharper, but the richness and vibrance of the colors was so much better. I sold my SDR H40 on Ebay inside two days. I now will have only one camera to shoot stills and 720p HD video the Canon SX20 IS. The videos from the SX20 IS looked awesome on both my 32 inch 720p LCD and my 100+ inch screen via a 720p DLP projector. I connected the camera with an HDMI cable and bam, I was prepared to watch great video and view still shots “on the big screen.” See the above referenced links for video footage yourself. If I were given the chance to watch a football game shot in standard meaning by ESPN or an HD variant of the same game, shot with the SX20 IS on a tripod, without my hand jitter, I’d pick the latter in a heart beat.

No buyer’s remorse here! If you need an SLR type camera, that does awesome stills and great 720p HD video both zoomable at 20x optical, you’d be hard pressed to get more bang for your buck then the SX20 IS on Amazon.

One minor issue I have noticed is that when zooming in/out while shooting video, you may be able to here a slight “click” when you begin the zoom and when you stop the zoom. There’s NO sound heard while the lens is zooming/telescoping in/out, the “click” is only heard when the zoom is initiated and when the zoom is stopped. The “click” isn’t that obvious. I had to shoot footage in silence, after the kids had gone to bed, to distinguish the “click.” In most shooting environments I do not expect it to be most of an issue.

Best of luck with your buy choice.

P.S. By the way, the owner manual states that you have to use the Canon software to move images/movies from the camera to a PC, else movies won’t move frames will be dropped properly and pictures shot vertically can be moved in the horizontal orientation. Do not just do a copy/paste of the files them self from the SD card. Keep this in mind as you view sample video on the web.

Use The Foilage Setting For Best Color Pics,
    September 12, 2009

By&nbsp,S. Barcomb New York See all my reviews
    REAL NAME
    &nbsp,&nbsp,

I received the camera some days ago. I wanted a good quality camera for all around, basic shooting. The major features that attracted me were the large angle/zoom lens and the video choice.

I am not an expert, or an experienced amateur. I just want to be able to point, shoot, and take decent pics and many occassional vidoe.

In my opinion, the best eye pleasing pictures are those that show the vibrant colors and color variations all other things being equal. I have experimented with different settings and taken the same shots with those different settings, and compared shots taken with Auto, Landscape, Portrait, etc. Against the Foilage setting SCN/Foilage, and the Foilage setting is by far the best for bringing out the colors which it’s meant to do anyway. In comparison to those pics taken using the Foilage setting, the ones taken in the other settings are dull not that they are not decent pictures in the other settings, just in comparison to the Foilage pictures they’re duller. So for basic shots, I’ll most likely use the Foilage setting most of the time for all around shooting the pictures are beautiful. One problem I expect with this, is to get to the Foilage setting, you have to use the top dial set to SCN, then using the free spinning dial on the back, choose foilage. Problem is, after taking shots and letting the camera hang against your body, the free spinning dial can be prone to be moved to choose another setting.

One of the issues I do have, isn’t being able to decide to set the Auto Focus frame to the center of the screen for many settings like Auto. I am not crazy about the “smart focus” which chooses which subjects that it thinks is the major subjects in my case of shooting usually non people so far, this “smart focus” was wrong. I think most of us non pro photographers typically center our subject nevertheless and if we do not, we should still have the choice of keeping the AF frame in the center. One other thing that has not worked for me is connecting it to HDMI on my TV. I am going to take it to Best purchase and attempt it there. If it still is not working, I hate to send it back because it’s a good camera, but I could like the HDMI feature to work to see my videos in true HD.

In summary, the wide to zoom feature is great, takes good pictures especially in Foilage, takes excellent video. The video choice is excellent you may be able to take pics while filming, and you may be able to simply press the video button in the back to start taking video if you are in a picture taking setting nice feature.

If you are not a pro photographer and want to have a great all around camera, this is certainly a good purchase. I hope I can get my HDMI/TV feature to work so I can keep my camera.

That&rsquo,s why the PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH features an ISO 1600 setting that decreases the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO may be extended to 3200 when you choose ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

The SD1200 has many big changes over its predecessor SD1100, and is the smallest, best intended Elph I have used far.

I’ve owned many models of Elph, this is my sixth or seventh, so my review is aimed particularly at other serial Canon holders. I usually compare the SD1200 to the SD1100.

The big changes: Digic4 and a bigger CCD sensor. The slight increase in CCD size 1/2.3″ vs 1/2.5″ should make for “cleaner” photos. And Digic4 promises faster/cleaner shots also.

You get 10MP vs 8MP on the SD1100, and “medium” M1 size is 6MP. JPG quality is down to two setting: good or Normal.

SD1200 is only somewhat smaller than the SD1100, but feels notably smaller by virtue of curved edges and the LCD being flush with the body no bump out.

The 1200 now feels as small as this design can shrink. Good news: my average sized male hands can still comfortably hold it, barely not covering lens, flash, or resting on the LCD. But the round power button is nearly too small to press if you had big fingers and no fingernails.

1200′s new battery is a higher capacity 1000mAh vs 760mAh for SD1100. There is also a new charger not matched with the old batteries, a glossy white colored model to blend into your wall.

The buttons and menus are simplified. There is now a button for review mode, pressing it a 2nd time takes you back to the last state. Useful. The slider has dedicated AUTO and Manual settings, not have to use menus for that switch.

Uninterrupted mode and ISO now are in the Function Menu on the SD1100, they had dedicated buttons.

A SD card is not included. This seems right to me, a 32MB card is barely useful, and with the down pressure on electronics prices, I can not imagine Canon wanting to bundle a more expensive/bigger card. Many people will find this lack annoying.

The A/V output is gone, and the USB connector now serves both reasons both types of included cables now have a USB end

A new variant of Canon software is needed for this model, Zoombrowser 6.3. Canon usually requires a new release for each new family/season of cameras. Unfortunately, the CameraWindow software was intentionally dumbed down in the 6.X software and not offers the alternatives to delete your photos have to go through the OS, nor to chose custom naming for the downloads. I say intentionally, since I asked Canon customer support about it and they stated the changes weren’t bugs. The last Canon software to still have that functionality was 5.X, corresponding to the SD1000 and other cameras released that season.

In informal indoor tests, the 1200 seemed more prepared to go to ISO400 often too “noisy” to be useful when the SD1100 could have chosen ISO200.

The SD1200 and SD1100 have same specifications on their optics. But, I noticed a more pronounced barrel distortion on the 1200 at extreme wide angle. Still only noticable in close up shots of straight edged things at wide angle

In a informal speed test, the SD1200 took/stored photos notably faster the SD1100 same scene, continuous mode, same brand SD card, in spite of the 1200′s image size being bigger.

Canon’s paper manuals have been shrinking steadily. With this model, the only manual included is a quick start guide, the rest is on CD ROM.

The packaging is more economical than before, about half the size of the SD1100′s box.

Sadly, there’s no HD video mode, though all of the other Elphs released this spring had HD. SD1200 holders are stuck with 640×480 video.

Canon has some number of sub series inside the compact Elph line, varying usually by asthetics and optics. The SD1200 is replacement to the series that included the SD1100, SD1000, and SD600. These all favor a classic, thin design. If you are unfamiliar with Canon’s Powershot cameras, there is lots of good material out there on camera sites like dpreview.

In general, the small sensors and optics in all ultra compact digital cameras lead to many optical quirks such as barrelling, chromatic aberrations, over/under exposure in bright sunlight/shade, and underpowered flashes. That is inherent to the size of camera, and vendors attempt to correct these effects in their on board processing. My opinion is that Canon does a great job of correcting for these issues and the Elphs as well as the SD1200 take good photos for their size.

It’s questionable that a SD1100 owner could exactly find this a compelling upgrade other than the Digic4, but this is an excellent compact camera in all ways. Separately from the noteworthy quirks: the lack of HD and the restricted features in the download software, this camera is greatly suggested.

I bought the SD110 3.2MP back in 2004 and decided it was time to upgrade this year as it showed many age. The new variant of that same line is the SD1200. I have had it for some weeks now and have some observations. The SD1200 is much faster from the time you turn it on till it’s prepared to shoot as in comparison to the SD110. Next, the screen is far better than the one on the SD110. Bright and readable in sunlight. The camera itself is smaller than the SD110 as you may expect but does feel a little cheaper. So far I have taken the SD1200 to three major events. A birthday party, K 4 graduation, backyard play time. The birthday part pictures didn’t turn out well in auto mode. We were indoors Pump it up and the lighting was most likely not the best. The pictures were blurry for the most part. I had the same issue at the second event K 4 graduation but this time I switched to manual mode and used the “indoor” setting. This largely improved the picture. , the outdoor shots turned out looking great in auto mode. With the SD110 the auto mode was generally better than any of the manual settings. It looks with the SD1200 that isn’t the case. I’ll continue to explore the settings/features of the camera. I expected the SD1200 to be far superior to my five year old SD110 but so far the pictures themselves haven’t turned out markedly better.

I am a professional photographer. I got tired of dragging my D3,D200 or another big cameras around, and worrying about it to get damaged. I decided to purchase a camera just for fun that could fit in my purse and I would not have a heart attack if it broke. Well I did not hold that high of expectations of the camera, but after to get it, I have had many of fun with it. Not the most amazing pictures come from it I am used to high quality pictures, but they’re good enough shots of my family. It is easy to use, really easy to set, FAST, and good low light. You do not generally need the flash. It is small, and can fit easily in my purse that are all calm small purses actually. This is a perfect camera if you just want many fun shots that are clear, and you want an easy to use fast camera. This isn’t good for “professional” type shots why do people write reviews of these cameras and get all down on them for not being professional grade cameras? They never assert to be!.
