No need for Windows or Internet Explorer, it is a Network Camera,

The BL C1A is listed as “requiring” both Windows and Internet Explorer. After some experimenting, it looks it does not, and is perfectly usable with Ubuntu or indeed any OS and Firefox. No need for Windows at all.
So, for anybody else who wants to use the BL C1A camera with something other than Windows here is how.
First, ignore the shiny Windows CDROM in the box. Input the camera into your router with your network cable they do not supply one! and plug in the power supply. Wait a minute. If your router is 192.168.0.1, the camera should default to 192.168.0.253 or 192.168.1.253 for a 192.168.1.1 router, etc.
From Firefox on the local network just go to the IP addess of the camera as above followed by ?Mode=local and you may want to get the camera’s fitted web server. The mode=local is essential, to activate it. Create an admin userid/password, hit enter. That is it.
Configuring the cameras for static addresses, different ports etc is all done via the web interface after that point, so still does not need Windows or IE .
With some lines written in the manual they could drop the Windows/IE prerequisite.
Camera works nicely, and so does emailing, and the viewnetcam dynamic dns service after some a fight with router settings. One warning: you can not test the viewnetcam service from the same network that the camera is on, so before you think it is not working attempt it from elsewhere!
Camera does the job good for the price, one point subtracted for not having any non Windows installation information.

Impressive for the price,

I has been impressed with the quality of this camera for the price. I’m now using it as a remote baby monitor. It was cheaper than the video monitors they sell for babies, and it is more versatile once I”m done using it for that function. The best part of it’s the back end functionality, but in general it is a nice camera. Many points:
1. Causes you may be able to set the camera up to send photos via email or FTP whenever motion is sensed, or at a regular interval. I am saving photos on my web server whenever the baby moves with ten minutes between each snapshot, , then I have a job that creates a time lapse movie at the end of each day. Useful? Not really, but pretty cool despite.
2. Web Server The web server is hard, will include authentication, and is easy to configure for inexperienced users.
3. Image quality The image quality throughout the day is amazingly good but keep in mind this is not a big lens camera, it is a webcam. Do not expect your 640×480 pictures to appear like they were taken with your digital camera. Instead, think camera phone but somewhat better. Surely good enough. Motion video is remarkable. I do not know how it seems from a bandwidth perspective, but I am guessing the wireless variant of this camera could be comparable. “Color Night Vision” is a joke, though. It does change amazingly well in low light conditions, but in general you need light. If you have a dim room, the image is literally black.
Again, in general I am impressed with the camera and feel it is a good value.

Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?
Bought this camera and got it installed in no time. Camera pictures are clean, and low light pictures are good. That surprised me giving the price. It is totally configurable by web browser, and I have adjusted settings and viewed pictures via explorer seven and fire fox.
The issues I have with this camera is its documentation and remote access over the net. Documentation is weak and if you run into config problems..you’re dead. Unless you’re versed in network configuration etc. I thought I was till I came across this camera..boy that took awhile. Accessing it over the internet requires configuring my router to let port forwarding etc.
As for to get emails..?..I’ve still to get one with pictures. The only emails I get is its reports of how many pix it takes everyday. I really wish that I have better support someplace for this side and I could be good.
But again, over the local lan.Its great.
